Entrevista exclusiva a Stuart Nicholson

En medio del lanzamiento del disco «Quiet Storms», la más reciente producción discográfica de la banda de Rock Neoprogresivo Británica, GALAHAD, entrevistamos a STUART NICHOLSON cantante y líder del grupo. En este diálogo exclusivo para Argentina, STU nos cuenta detalles sobre el pasado, presente y futuro de la banda, sus impresiones acerca de lo que se sucede en la actualidad con la escena del Rock Progresivo, sus influencias musicales, los métodos de composición y mucho más en una charla más que interesante con el dueño de una de las voces más personales y sobresalientes del género».

C: Hola Stu! ¿¡Cómo estás!?

En primer lugar, muchas gracias por acceder a esta entrevista exclusiva para FM Costa Sur 94.3 Mhz, Mar de Ajó, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

SN: Hola! Estoy bien gracias, aunque he tenido molestia en una de mis piernas durante unos días, no estoy seguro cual fue la causa, pero fue muy doloroso y gracias a Dios parece que por fin me estoy recuperando.

C: Stu, cuéntanos ¿Cuando y cómo fue tu primer contacto con la música?

SN: La primera canción que recuerdo haber escuchado fue “Imagine” de John Lennon, en la radio a principios de los 70’s, supongo. Esto me debe haber causado tal impresión que realmente me gustó y The Beatles fue la primer banda que me interesó, como fue el caso de muchas personas de mi generación, supongo. Luego me metí con el Glam Rock, con bandas como Slade, Mud, Sweet y también David Bowie, luego vino Queen y después Genesis, Yes, Rush, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, Barclay James Harvest, Focus, etc…., me convertí en un fanático del Rock Progresivo, a fines de los 70’s y principios de los 80’s.
Aunque curiosamente “Wichita Lineman” de Glen Campbell es una de mis canciones favoritas de todos los tiempos, me encanta el anhelo, la fuerte sensación de la canción. Pero luego, llegaría Jimmy Webb quien considero un brillante escritor de canciones, independientemente del género.

C: ¿Cuáles son los cantantes que te han influenciado?

SN: La segunda banda que me entusiasmó a temprana edad, después de escuchar en la radio “Killer Queen”, fue Queen e inmediatamente salí a comprar “Sheer Heart Attack”, mi primer álbum! Freddie Mercury es sencillamente mi cantante favorito de todos los tiempos, en términos de su voz y su presencia escénica masiva, especialmente para un muchacho tan pequeño!¡He visto algunos de los trajes originales de Zandra Rhodes que Freddie Mercury vistió a principios y mediados de los 70’s y son minúsculos!
Mis otros cantantes favoritos son Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, Ronnie James Dio, Karen Carpenter, Chris Thompson, Jon Anderson, Till Lindemann, Serj Tankian, todos por diferentes razones, pero Freddie estuvo y siempre estará en la cima de la montaña.

C: ¿Cuál es la temática de composición de Galahad? ¿Ingresan al estudio con los papeles en blanco, con una idea determinada o esto surge espontáneamente?

SN: Suelo escribir todas las letras, lo cual parece algo natural teniendo en cuenta que yo soy el cantante.
Tenemos muchas maneras de componer, a veces la música llega primero, principalmente partiendo de las ideas musicales escritas por el tecladista Dean Baker y yo, ya sea encontrando o escribiendo las letras inspiradas en la música.
A veces, vienen primero las letras y Dean y yo escribimos la música entorno a estas.
Muy de vez en cuando durante esos días, más aún en los primeros días, vamos a una sala de ensayo para realizar algunas grabaciones con la idea de tratar de lograr algo juntos, aunque teniendo en cuenta los teclados, este método no siempre fue tan bueno para mí como cantante, pero en general a los músicos les encanta esto.
A veces las canciones pueden lograrse en cuestión de minutos, a veces esto puede llevar meses y en algunos casos, años.
Actualmente, tenemos listas cerca de dos docenas de canciones para trabajar, lo que equivale a unos cuatro discos de material, por lo tanto, hay mucho trabajo para mantenernos ocupados.

C: ¿Cuál es tu visión de la escena del Rock Progresivo actual y que bandas te gustan?

SN: No conozco mucho sobre la escena “actual” del Rock Progresivo, pero por lo que veo y leo, el género goza de su mejor salud en mucho tiempo, parece que hay más bandas Progresivas que nunca, tal vez demasiado!
¡La dificultad es cortar con todo el “ruido” para ser escuchado!
Afortunadamente, nosotros tenemos un seguimiento razonable establecido, que siempre parece apoyarnos con cada álbum, y a lo largo del camino, siempre tendemos a ganar algunos nuevos fans, también.
A mediados de los 80’s, cuando nosotros comenzamos era dificultoso ser escuchados, “Progresivo” era una palabra sucia, especialmente en el Reino Unido, teniendo en cuenta que esto sucedía justo después de la era “post punk” y era muy poco “cool”, pero a nosotros eso nunca nos molestó, lo tomamos como una reacción.
En estos días, creo que el Rock Progresivo es más aceptado como es, sólo otro género musical muy amplio.

C: ¿Stu, has estado en Argentina alguna vez?¿Te gustaría venir a tocar con GALAHAD aquí?

SN: Nos encantaría tocar en Argentina, de hecho, hace muchos años, estuvimos a punto de hacerlo, es una cuestión económica y de logística, pero si alguien quisiera financiar un concierto o dos, entonces estaríamos más que felices de ir ¿¡Algún arrendatario!?

C: Luego de casi 32 años como integrante de GALAHAD, el guitarrista y miembro fundador Roy Keyworth sorpresivamente decidió alejarse de la música en general.
¿Cómo impactó esto en el corazón de GALAHAD?¿Han logrado conseguir un guitarrista reemplazante estable, independientemente de la colaboración de Karl Groom?

SN: Lo de Roy es una lástima, pero para ser honesto no fue algo completamente inesperado ya que en los últimos años se había hecho evidente que su entusiasmo por la banda estaba disminuyendo, teniendo en cuenta que no mostraba interés en escribir y en el trabajo general en el estudio, se presentaba tarde a los ensayos, en fin, creo que su corazón ya no estaba en la banda. Mientras que el resto de nosotros, como siempre, somos muy apasionados con el grupo, a todos nos encanta escribir, ensayar, grabar y tocar en vivo, tanto como siempre lo hemos hecho.
Nos hemos reagrupado y no puedo esperar más por el regreso a los escenarios. Tenemos un nuevo guitarrista cuyo nombre será anunciado a fines de este año. Ha grabado todas sus partes de guitarra, para nuestro nuevo álbum “Seas Of Change” y suena bastante bien, incluso si yo mismo lo digo. De modo que el futuro parece brillar para la banda. Cada cambio que hemos hecho en el grupo siempre ha dado lugar a más positividad y nos ha hecho avanzar.

C: Este año GALAHAD editará dos discos nuevos, “Quiet Storms” y “Seas Of Change”. ¿Qué puedes contarnos acerca de estas obras?

SN: “Quiet Storms” está compuesto por 15 canciones y es mucho más melodioso, me atrevería a decir una suerte de liberación pastoral tranquila, (sin guitarra eléctrica exceptuando la última canción) de ahí el título y también es un álbum muy personal para mí.
“Seas of Change” es el polo opuesto, consta de una solo tema de 44 minutos de duración (para el formato vinilo) y será una grabación completamente vinculada al estilo del Rock Progresivo. Supongo que la mejor descripción de este trabajo es que se trata de una mezcla entre el más primitivo y tradicional sonido Progresivo de GALAHAD y el ambiente más metálico y actualizado de los últimos discos. De hecho, será muy interesante saber lo que la gente piensa del álbum. A cruzar los dedos, todo saldrá bien!

C: Stu, gracias por tu tiempo, ha sido un placer para mí entrevistarte, en nombre de FM Costa Sur, te lo agradecemos. Te deseamos todo lo mejor con los nuevos discos de GALAHAD “Quiet Storms” y «Seas Of Change». Es nuestro deseo que GALAHAD venga a Argentina, algún día. Hasta cualquier momento.

«THE INTERVIEW» – ENGLISH VERSION

C: Hi, STU! How are you!?

First of all, we would like to thank you for accessing this exclusive interview for FM Costa Sur 94.3 Mhz from Mar de Ajó, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

SN: Hi! I’m fine thank you, although I’ve had a bad leg for a few days, not sure what caused it and was very painful to begin with but seems to be healing at last thank goodness.

C: STU, tell us ¿When and how was your first contact with music?

SN: The first song I remember hearing was Imagine by John Lennon on the radio back in the early 1970s I guess. It must have made an impression as I really liked it and the Beatles were the first band I ever got in to, as was the case with many people of my generation I guess. I then got in to a lot of glam rock rock i.e. Slade, Mud, Sweet and Bowie too and then came Queen…and then Genesis, Yes, Rush, Floyd, Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Tull, BJH, Focus etc…yes I became a massive Prog fan in the late 70s and early 80s.
Although, oddly Wichita Lineman by Glen Campbell is one of my faourite all time songs, I just love the yearning, stark feel of the track. But then Jimmy Webb was always a brilliant song writer regardless of genre.

C: Who are the singers who influenced you?

SN: The second band I got in to at an early age after hearing ‘Killer Queen’ on the radio was Queen, I immediately went out bought ‘Sheer Heart Attack’ my first album! Freddie is easily my favourite all time vocalist in terms of his voice and his massive stage presence, esopecially for such a small guy! I’ve seen some of the original Zandra Rhodes costumes he wore in the early/mid 70s and they are tiny!
My other favourite vocalists are Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, Ronnie James Dio, Karen Carpenter, Chris Thompson, Jon Anderson, Till Lindemann and Serj Tankian all for differing reasons but Freddie was and always will be top of the pile.

C: What is the thematic of Galahad’s composition? Do they enter the studio with blank papers, with a certain idea or does it arise spontaneously?

SN: I tend to write all the words which seems natural as I’m the singer!
There are many ways that we write, sometimes the music comes first, mainly from musical ideas written by Dean and I will either find or write words that are inspired by the music.
Or sometimes the words come first and Dean and I will write music around the words.
Very occasionally these days, but more so in the early days we would jam in a rehearsal studio and take recordings and I‘d try and put something together although this method wasn’t always so good for the singer as keys were not always correct for me, but the musicians loved it!
Sometimes songs may come together in a matter of minutes, sometimes they may take months or even years in a couple of cases!
We currently have about two dozen tracks ready to work on which equates to about four albums worth of material so plenty to keep us busy.

C: What is your vision of the current Progressive Rock scene and which bands do you like?

SN: I don’t know that much about the ‘current’ scene but from what I see and read it looks as if it is the best health it’s been for a very long time, there appear to be a more ‘Prog’ bands than ever, maybe too many!
The difficulty is cutting through all the ‘noise’ to get heard! Luckily we have a reasonable established following who always seem to support us with each album and we always tend to gain a few new fans along the way too.
It was difficult to get heard when we started in the mid 80s as ‘Prog’ was a dirty word, especially in the UK as it was just after the era of post punk and very un-cool, but that never bothered us, we kind of did it as a reaction.
These days I think it’s more accepted as it’s just another musical genre a very broad one!

C: STU, do you know Argentina? Would you like to come and play here with GALAHAD?

SN: We would love to play in Argentina, in fact many years ago we almost did but it’s a case of money and logistsics but if someone would like to fund a show or two then we’d be more than happy to come over, any takers??!

C: After almost 32 years as a member of GALAHAD, guitarist and founding member Roy Keyworth unexpectedly decided to move away from music in general.
How did this impact the heart of GALAHAD? Have they succeeded in getting a stable replacement guitarist, regardless of Karl Groom’s collaboration?

SN: It is a shame about Roy but to be honest not entirely unexpected as it had become obvious in the last few years that his enthusiasm for the band was waning as he showed no interest in writing and the studio work and would turn up late at rehearsals, I just think his heart was no longer in it.
Whereas the rest of us are as passionate about the band as ever, we all love writing, rehearsing, recording and performing as much as we always have done.
We have regrouped and can’t wait to get back out on the boards again, probably next Spring. We do have a new guitarist who will be announced later this year. He has recorded all his parts for our up and coming new album ‘Seas of Change’ and it sounds rather good even if I do say so myself.
So yes the future looks bright for the band, every change we have ever made in the band has always resulted in more positivity and in us moving forward.

C: This year GALAHAD will released two new albums, “Quiet Storms” and “Seas Of Change”. What can you tell us about these works?

SN: Quiet Storms consists of 15 tracks and is a much more mellow, dare I say it quiet pastoral release, (no electric guitar apart from the last track) hence the title and it’s also a very personal album to me.
‘Seas of Change’ is the polar opposite, consisting of just one 44 minute track (for Vinyl) and will be a full on Prog/Rock record. I guess it’s best best described as a mixture between the older more traditional Galahad/Prog sound and the more up to date heavier more metallic vibe of the last few albums. In fact it’ll be interesting to see what people think of it. Fingers crossed it’ll go down okay.

C: STU, thank you for your time, it has been a pleasure for me to interview you, on behalf of FM Costa Sur of Mar de Ajó and my own, we really thank you.
